Day 5 (27Jan 2015)

What we have done
-

What we plan to do next session
Do the experiment for Temperature of Hotplate
Calculate the rate of which the above factor mentioned affects evaporation

What is left to accomplish

Do the experiment for Temperature of Hotplate
Calculate the rate of which the above factor mentioned affects evaporation
Conclude which factor affects evaporation the most

Elaboration
Some set-backs we faced today were that there was a power trip so the heater could not be used. We thus could not do the experiment for temperature of hotplate as if we used a water bath or another heater, the temperature used for the experiment for the factor tested and the control would be different.

Day 3 (22 Jan 2015)

What we have done
We did the experiments for Control, Purity, Light and Surface Area
We decided not to test for Temperature of Surroundings
We decided to test for Wind instead
We decided to change Temperature of Water to Temperature of Hotplate
We edited our final proposal to fit our experiment.

What we plan to do the next session
Do the experiment for Temperature of Hotplate
Do the experiment for Wind
Calculate the rate of which the factors mentioned above affect the rate of evaporation.

What is left to accomplish
Submit our final proposal and wait for approval
Do the experiment for Temperature of Hotplate
Do the experiment for Wind
Calculate the rate of which the factors mentioned above affect the rate of evaporation.
Conclude which factor affects evaporation the most.

Elaboration
We decided not to test for temperature of surroundings as we would need to heat up the whole beaker. However, with a hotplate, that would not be possible as the bottom of the beaker, which is closer to the hotplate than the rest of the beaker, would be the hottest. To test this factor, we would need to use a water bath. However, we had already decided against using the water bath as the temperature of the water bath decreases once it reaches the maximum temperature that it can reach. The temperature of the water bath also decreases when there is not enough water in the water bath, but when we add more water, the temperature decreases even further, thus if the water bath was used, the temperature would not have been constant.
Average amount of water evaporated
Purity(decrease)39.0(3SF)
Surface Area(decrease)16.0(3SF)
Control32.7(3SF)
Light(decrease)27.7(3SF)

Day 2 (21 Jan 2015)

What we have done
We edited our proposal so that the distillation set-up is not needed anymore
We went to the lab tech to inform her of the changes in the materials that we need.
We decided not to use the cardboard box for our experiment as we will be dealing with heat and since cardboard is flammable, it will be very dangerous.

What we plan to do the next session
Do the experiment for Control
Do the experiment for Purity
Calculate the rate of which each factor mentioned above affects evaporation
We will be doing these experiments in Biology Lab 1 tomorrow (22 Jan) at 1.30 pm

What is left to accomplish
Waiting approval of edited proposal
Do the experiment for Control
Do the experiment for Light
Do the experiment for Surface Area
Do the experiment for Temperature of Water
Do the experiment for Temperature of Surroundings
Calculate the rate of which each factors evaporation
Conclude which factor affects the rate of evaporation the most

Day 1 (20 Jan 2015)

What we have done:
Discuss the materials that we need in more detail
Find out if the materials are available in the engineering lab
Come up with a second (more accurate) list of materials that we need to get
We assigned Joel to get a cardboard box that is big enough to fit the whole distillation apparatus
We assigned Elgin to get the salt

What we plan to do the next session:
Setup the distillation apparatus
Do the experiment for Control
Do the experiment for Purity
Calculate the rate of which each factor mentioned above affects evaporation
We will be doing these experiments in Biology Lab 1 Thursday (22 Jan) at 1:30pm

What is left to accomplish:
Waiting approval of proposal
Do the experiment for Control
Do the experiment for Light
Do the experiment for Surface Area
Do the experiment for Temperature of Water
Do the experiment for Temperature of Surroundings
Calculate the rate of which each factors affects evaporation
Conclude which factor affects the rate of evaporation the most

3 Variables and Hypothesis

Independent Variable: Surface Area, Temperature of water, Temperature of Surroundings, Purity of Water
Dependent Variable: The rate of evaporation of the water (ml/min)
Constant Variable: The amount of water, the rest of the independent variables except for the one being tested on.

Hypothesis: The hypothesis is the independent variable affects the rate of evaporation such that it may either increase or decrease in such a way that it will not remain the same.
